Am I the only person who thought this place was just OKAY?? Maybe it was just the day I went on (Friday the 13th lol), but I went here with my mom and sister and we all agreed that the food was VERY average and didn't understand why they were rated #1 in the Silicon Valley for Best Chinese Restaurant. Our waitress was nice, but there were a couple other staff that seemed pretty standoff-ish and not very approachable if we had to ask where the restroom was. We went during lunch time and I ordered the Prawns with Black Bean Sauce and Brown Rice. The veggies could've been a little more tender but on the flip side, the prawns were great! Most places I go to get very skimpy on the protein, but this place was actually pretty generous, so I give them a bonus for that. We probably won't be back, but I thought I just give this place a try since it's considered the #1 rated Chinese restaurant in the SV. Why, I honestly don't know...but the prices we paid for a party of 3 was okay, I guess. Overall, food was very average, prices so-so, service....eh....I've been to better restaurants with a more welcoming and caring staff.

I've been coming here since childhood & have always enjoyed their delicious food. I'd say probably one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area. Service is usually prompt except for a recent stop in on NYE. I knew they'd be insanely busy so I opted for a to go order which I was told would be 15-20 minutes. I came in to pick up my order & the place was an absolute zoo! The ladies were running around like crazy. People were crammed in & orders were all mixed up. It was chaotic to say the least. I paid & was told by an employee that my food would be ready in a few more minutes. Fast forward 30 minutes later & still no food. I was asked repeatedly what my name was, phone number, & what I ordered - still no food. Another employee even wrote down my entire order which led me to believe they had the kitchen remake my missing order. At this point I was pretty angry & ready to walk out. Had I not already paid, I would have. 40 minutes later they brought my food out. No apologies or anything to justify their mistake. If their food wasn't so good I'd probably rate a 1 star & I'm hoping it was a one time mistake. I'll likely go in again, but lesson learned on ordering food on a holiday evening. Never again.

Ive been coming here since i was twelve yrs old. The quality of the food is extremely delicious and there Chinese chicken salad is my favorite. From soups,to seafood, and even veggie dishes, this place has FLAVOR. I love this place now my baby girl eating here since she was baby. Wonderful place

Not what I expected! The service was okay and they seemed like nice people but the food was bland. I will stick have to try another place for take-out

I have been going here for years. The decor is beautiful, with lanterns, good luck bamboo and paintings. It's also very clean---they wash the tables and change the tablecloths very often---not a spot on them! The place has 2 rooms, and the first one is on the narrow side. I got there around 12:30 and got a seat near the cash register. I ordered the twice cooked pork lunch special--with white rice, since they charge extra for fried. For side you get a bowl of soup--I got the wonton, which had 2 won tons in it, and the Chinese chicken salad. Nice salad, if a bit sweet. The pork is very good with cabbage, red peppers and onions, and was cooked to perfection. The tea was great to have as well. Owners are really nice and ask if everything was good. I didn't notice and specials today. Sometimes I see a sign with a special with something tropical like mango or something like that.

Stopped in here on a whim before an appointment and was pleasantly surprised. Food came out very fast and was very tasty. I got the eggplant over noodles (I adore eggplant!) and really liked the heat of it... Enough to keep things interesting, but not too spicy to distract from the flavor. Definitely will come back next time I'm in the area. Also, there's a news article hanging on the wall which talks about the owners and how they worked up to having this business, and I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff so I was pleased to be spending my money here (even if it is a bit pricey--- at least the portions are huge to maych) instead of a chain restaurant :)

Pretty good spot right in the middle of willow glen with great lunch specials. Everyone is very friendly

I'm a fan. Good food, friendly people, great menu selections. They serve alcohol too which not too many Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants around here do- so that's a plus. Tried many items and enjoyed them all. Some favorites: Firecracker chicken- flavorful & very spicy (with chillies) Broccoli and beef with garlic- loved the garlic flavor! Beef chowmein is good I prefer the pork fried rice over the pineapple fried rice because I don't like peanuts & pineapples in my rice. I Don't recommend the filet mignon and mushrooms because it doesn't appear to be filet mignon & it's just an ok dish!

Tai Wan has new ownership recently but it is still the best Chinese food - and one of the best family restaurants - in Willow Glen. The offerings are a good mix of traditional American-Chinese plus selections familiar to those who have traveled in China. There are many vegetarian options. In hot weather, Tai Wan's cold noodles tossed with egg and vegetables are delightful. On a cold day, try sizzling rice soup with chicken or hot and sour soup, followed by tofu with leeks, orange peel chicken, or eggplant with noodles. Our favorite appetizer is chicken lettuce cups. Prices are reasonable. Tai Wan is popular for take-out as well as dine-in. We have been happy patrons of Tai Wan about once a week for twenty years.

Under new ownership, but the menu and staff are kept the same. The food is still really good! I'm glad the new owner kept the same staff since we've come to get to know them. As always food is delicious, staff is awesome and the new owner is very friendly

I don't always come here but when I do I make reservations!?! Been wanting to try this place for quite a while now.....and waited till Valentine's Day to try it...don't worry I made reservations...and guess what?!?...it helped as the line was out the door that day! We only had to wait about 5-10mins as they cleared off our table and we were seated and given the menu/tea/water right away. The decor and ambiance was great, a very romantic setting to woo the ladies, and what more can you ask for on Valentine's Day when your primary goal is to GET IT IN!?! ~~~~~~~~ We started off the meal with some Wonton Soup. Nothing special, nothing great, but it was good! yelp.com/biz_photos/taiw… You've been warned, the entrees are HUGE, they are meant to be shared with 3-4 people and go perfect with steamed rice. Let's break it down yo!?! Sweet and Sour Pork - so yummy, the quality of pork was really good. I've gone to so many places where the pork doesn't taste fresh kind of like that DVD quality but this was on point and the flavor was amazing! yelp.com/biz_photos/taiw… Kung Pao Three Delights - this had prawns, scallops and chicken in a spicy sauce with peanuts and scallions. So yummy! yelp.com/biz_photos/taiw… Cod Fish in black bean sauce - Really flavorful and good, the old lady was craving fish and this was BOMB.COM !?! yelp.com/biz_photos/taiw… ~~~~~~~~~~~ The Taiwan Restaurant is great and located in the small downtown area of Willow Glen in San Jose. They don't have private parking lot but there is plenty of nearby parking in front of the store or around the block. I will definitely be back here again, possibly with a bigger party to help eat all of their generous portions!?!

Not a single chop stick or Chinese patron to be found... That says it all But the flavors overcome my singleton Chinese presence, as the egg plant with shrimp was good. Chinese dumplings lacked wow and was sub par. Tea bags are also baaaaaddd form. Kudos to the great staff to go great length to find a dish that would suit a decent authentic palette. Beautiful Hollywood Chinese atmosphere that was pleasant too

Went to Taiwan with my wife last week for date night. We are looking for a good, consistent Chinese food place, and I think we found it! We ordered Steamed rice beef broccoli chicken with green beans wor won ton soup shrimp chow mein and finished with fried bananas Everything was great! Meat was tender and well seasoned, there were plenty of shrimp in the chow mein and they were all clean! (I hate it when they aren't) The soup was just eh, not the best i've had. The portions were great. I knew this would be a bit much for two people, but left overs are always welcomed in our home! The service was excellent though!. Everyone we encountered was so welcoming and friendly. They didn't rush us and totally catered to our every need. The busser was super quick and attentive. I gave him a tip of his own. I have been here before and remember the food being good. I'm just glad it hasn't changed in the last couple years. So it meets what we were looking for, goo, consistent Chinese food! So why only 4 stars? Well, I can't really put a finger on it, it just wasn't a five star restaurant. Great atmosphere, people, timing, but not a 5 star place But DON'T skip it because of that!! A must try in Willow Glen :)

People often talk about the difference between Americanized Chinese food and authentic Chinese good, and Taiwan Restaurant is a great example of the former. Based on the name, I was naive to think that there would actually be some Taiwanese dishes on the menu, but there was nothing to be found. For these prices, you are much better off going to Cupertino or Milpitas and eating where the Chinese community eats. Is the food here horrible? No. But it's also pretty similar to what's on offer at a food court Panda Express.

We have been coming to Taiwan since 1983, not long after they opened. It was just one room then. But the flower arrangements have always been spectacular! We always have hot and sour soup. In fact, we have this soup around the world and have never tasted any better than this. Rich always gets da chien chicken for lunch. It's nice and spicy. You get soup, salad, entrée, rice and tea for less than $10 at lunch. In all, we love Taiwan and eat there whenever we visit our old stomping ground. It's the best! T

I grew up on this Chinese food and now that I've moved away from San Jose, nothing else satisfies. I love the chicken chow mein here, and the broccoli beef is outstanding. Everything is dressed in a sauce nicely. Someone on here said they had a problem with oil, but I'm my experience, the sauces ARE made with some oil, but it tastes fresh and light. My broccoli beef is always soaked in sauce (as it should be) and it still doesn't overwhelm the taste of the fresh, crunchy broccoli or tender beef. Everything I have had seems very well balanced, fresh, and filling. You have to at least try this place once. Delicious! The only reason I have this place one less star is because I was greeted and seated a little more briskly than I like. I don't like the "walk-in, get processed" feeling that comes from some Asian restaurants, but I'm sure this is just a cultural thing with me. I'd rather get a pause and a smile than being immediately whisked away. If this IS your thing, then you will be happy.

Hands down, the best Chinese restaurant in the South Bay (dropped the mic). I have eaten at the restaurant numerous times, as well as, order takeout. My #1 go to! The mixed fried rice is a meal in itself and very tasty. Perfectly prepared rice that doesn't feel drenched in oil. Tender chicken, not chewy beef, and large shrimp. Honey walnut prawns are my favorite item on the menu. The food quality is very high and there is a reason they receive the "best" awards year after year. It's the same reason I will be a continuing customer. Other go to items: - broccoli beef - Kung pao chicken - mixed chow mein - egg rolls

Came here because my bfs Caucasian coworker kept raving about it. Definitely caters to non-Asian pallets IMO. Food was good, but I knew I've had better at other places. Portion sizes are definitely great for 2-3 people. Found it kind of funny that chopsticks must be requested. But I must say, SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE. lol. Something you don't experience at any other Asian restaurants.

Underwelming....ordered thru Dor dash on Saturday night 2/21/15. Maybe we just don't know what to order there. The BEST and only thing we liked was the Wok fried beef. That was pretty delish Chicken Chow Meain was not good at all. Pork Fried rice~ was okay~but it wasn't char sui pork...least didn't seem like it was. Chestnut Chicken~ummm...they were canned chestnuts...smh...no one ate it. Orange chicken~whats up with the canned produce??? Again with the canned water chestnuts galore! Yuck. Maybe we just don't know what to order from here...

I am moving this up to 5 stars. Yes, that good. We were away in the East Bay area for the past 2 weeks, and tried 2 Chinese restaurants. Like, ugh! The food at those places was tasteless and just no where near the quality food we have enjoyed over the years at Taiwan. Last trip we got honey walnut prawns, chicken chow mein, pot stickers and minced shrimp with lettuce cups. All items were just superbly tasting. Great seasoning and all meals were fresh and delicious. You can't find a better Chinese place than Taiwan in Willow Glen. A fan favorite for over 30 years.

My boyfriend was the only Chinese customer in the entire establishment. The menu was entirely written in English, and there were no chopsticks to be found. All bad signs for an Asian restaurant in the heart of the Bay Area. However, we held out hope based on the reviews posted on the window and the fact that the waitress wrote our order in Chinese that maybe everything would be okay. I don't know if the chef has changed since the rave reviews in the windows or maybe we ordered all the wrong things, but all three of our dishes, including the ones from the chef specialties section, were horrible. We have never been to a restaurant that had such a heavy hand with the corn starch. Everything was a goopy mess and lacked any depth of flavor. The eggplant noodle was probably the most edible of the three (it's really hard to mess up Chinese eggplant), but it was still a bit too sweet, goopy, and one-dimensional flavor-wise. The chef chicken with lemongrass (?) was bland, goopy, and inedible. I think it was called Jimmy's or Johnny's Chicken? I don't even remember the third dish besides the fact that it was awful and inexplicably covered in corn starch. We now refer to it as the corn starch place every time we pass by. Other than that, the service was good; we were seated quickly, and the interior is pretty with large flower arrangements and red tablecloths.

I've tried this place 3x. The first time I dined in which was decent. The last two times I got takeout. They have to have a different cook for takeout because it's beyond disgusting!!! It's all grease and oil, fatty meat and literally makes you want to throw up. I uploaded pictures. They lost my business because of this last time. I'd rather go to Panda Express which uses less oil and is consistent.

Taiwan Restaurant has average Won-Ton soup at best. It wasn't bad, but it did not warrant having "Wor" included in its name. Maybe the soup is the wrong thing to order at this place. Decided to give this place a try during #rainageddon because cold, rainy weather makes me hangry for soup! Wor Won-Ton soup was ordered as take-out and the timeliness of the service was a plus. However, once the soup got home and I opened the containers, I noticed that what should be brimming with tasty veggies and meats, contained some obviously prepackaged squares of carrots and peas, with a few pieces of chicken and shrimp. Where's the beef?! Where's the pork?! Do mushrooms exist? And most importantly, where is the bok choy? I am curious with what's in the regular won-ton soup. Basic broth and won-tons, I expect. Speaking of the won-tons, the main ingredient must be ginger, because that is the majority of what I tasted. I expect ginger in won-tons but not to this extent. The broth was bland for a chicken broth, which I assume is meant to compliment the strong bite of the won-tons. I can't say my taste buds appreciated this particular combination. One good thing I can say about the soup is that there wasn't added MSG, as the broth tasted pretty watered down and I didn't experience the need to chug a gallon of water afterwards. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but if I do happen upon Taiwan Restaurant again, I will try something else.

We went here for dinner last night. The food is slightly below average. I wasn't too impressed with the rock cod with garlic eggplants. It's too tangy and salty at the same time. It had to eat more rice just to tone down the mix. I think they put too much sauce and I feel like they use the same sauce for all the stir fried items. Mixed sizzling rice soup is good but it's bit greasy. The burnt fried rice smelland tasted the oil. Our best item is the garlic green bean. It quite tender and yummy.

Ok, maybe it was an off night for the restaurant as I know it's a neighborhood favorite. But this was the worst Chinese food I've had in awhile. Everything soaked in greasy oil. As the waiter placed our food on the table, I could see the oil separating from the food. There was so much oil that I could tip the plate and pour it into a cup. It was late at night and we were really hungry so pouring off some of the oil sort of made the food edible. When we went to pay out bill the hostess (who I think was the owner) asked how our dinner was. Told her we could barely eat it, everything soaked in greasy oil. She apologized and said the next time we came back she would cook our meal herself. We will never go back to find out if she is a better cook than whoever was in the kitchen that night.

DO NOT GO HERE! I am completely disgusted they have changed everything for the worse. The customer service is completely horrible! I was asking about several items and the waitress I believe her name was Sue was completely rude! The lady sitting aside from me was screaming "cockroach cockroach"!! They had what appeared to be a restaurant roach on the table!!!! In order to have restaurant roaches they need to be a problem. Who knows what people are eating. Next time you go ask them about the roaches. Look at the facial expression. I hope someone, reports them.

our go to Chinese place in San Jose... Decor is colorful and lively, service is friendly and timely, and the food is delicious! We love the combination chow mien, lemon chicken, fried prawns -- this is our staple order! Good stuff worth the visit!

this is my 2nd time to visit the place with my family. i will visit more often because of the service and food. the manager wayne who is last time i recommended is really excellent. i really love his serving style. he gave us some desserts and drinks (wayne made)on the house. for food, i ordered beef brolli, fried rice with pineapple, salt and pepper scallops, garlic eggplant over noodles and sozzling rice soup. they were really tasty. great food great service!

If I rated Taiwan Restaurant's decor alone I would give them four stars. The wait staff always wear Chinese style clothing which adds to the ambiance. But because of the food I can only give them three stars. I craved a bit of spicy food so I ordered the King Pao Chicken, and asked for it to be extra spicy. Well it was only fair and not very spicy. My lunch came with a small salad as well as Hot and Sour soup which was good. My daughter had spicy vegetables with tofu. She said it was okay but nothing to rave about. So for service and ambiance they do very well. Which is probably why they have a loyal following ( my opinion for what that's worth ). But I find the food to be nothing spectacular.

Went to this place because a friend told us it was good. Did not know what to really expect because from the outside doesn't look anything special. Walked in and the staff was very friendly. The owner stopped by our office often to make sure our meal was great. Food was delicious and did not feel very heavy like traditional chinese food, so we didn't feel very guilty. Will definitely be returning!!

This is not authentic Taiwanese food. I just find it misleading to call a restaurant "Taiwan Restaurant" when there are no authentic Taiwanese dishes on the menu. Do research on what real Taiwanese food is before coming here.

I have to drop a star from this place after my last visit this past weekend, because although the service and ambiance were as good as before, they have now removed the "meals for two" options from their menu, which is what drew me back to this place to start with after the initial Christmas dinner with my pastor. I really liked the simplicity of looking at the short list and easily being able to pick popular dishes for a good meal, whereas now the menu is quite long and it takes a world of time to go through it all trying to find what you want. Sure, I'll still come back from time to time because it IS tasty with good service after all...but the menu no longer sets itself apart from other Chinese places by making it easier for the customer to put an order together at an all-for-one meal price.

We came here for lunch yesterday, the food was ok, typical Chinese / fusion food but the customer service was excellent. I totally would rate this place 5 stars ++ for the customer service. But 3 stars for the foods & price.

This place really just seems to pander to how white Willow Glen is. The atmosphere is really over done, to the point where it seems that they went to the mall, grabbed a bunch of "Chinese" art and covered the restaurant in it. The food is very meh. All of it is very bland and would be things that every person from Iowa would order. Not close even close to authentic.

The super delicious family owned Chinese spot on a very cute street. Came here for lunch, had the broccoli beef special. Delicious, competitively priced and fast. Exactly what you want at a Taiwanese place. Will def come back if I happen to be back on Lincoln again.

Under new ownership for several months now, and still the BEST Chinese food in the Valley! If imaginable, the food is even better. The new owners wisely bought the restaurant & recipes and kept the same staff. The previous owners have retired & moved back to Taiwan; a well earned retirement, but their legacy is alive & thriving in Willow Glen. We've dined here for years and it remains our go to place for excellent Chinese fare. The extensive menu and top notch service will satisfy the most discerning diner. Nice atmosphere, superb food and service. Dine in or take away, you'll be pleased.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
